Trans Pecos Ratsnake - Prolapse Story

  • Jan. 22nd, 2008 at 6:33 PM
Bullsnake
On friday night i discovered that my female trans pecos ratsnake had developed a prolapsed colon. Immediately i placed her in lukewarm water and soaked her for a good ten minutes, before finally placing her in a small container with warm moist paper towel.

This girl has not eaten for me since i got her, and while im not typically worried about this ( shes still active, alert and over all generally healthy)I was concerned with why she would prolapse for no apparent reason. shes defecated twice since ive had her, and pees regularly.

So i call around to SEVERAL different vets, anyone in massachusetts that treats reptiles, before i finally found one that knew how to help me. I gave them a ring and after speaking to a few different people, i talked with one of the main emergency vets. He said that it sounded like i was doing everything as i should be. ( i was now soaking her in a sugar/water mix to reduce the swelling of the prolapsed colon) he told me that i would not be able to get her in until monday.

I wasnt willing to wait until monday for the prolapse to be looked at, so i contacted a couple friends who i felt, would be experienced enough to help me with this problem. Being in the middle of nowhere and pretty much in need of immediate help i had to ask for advice. This was way beyond my experience.

Both friends were of an immense help, regardless of the fact that they had never really dealt with a prolapse before, they gave me tips and how i should go about taking care of things.

I ended up being able to replace the prolapse ( VERY carefully, and i DO NOT recommend it to ANY other person to treat these on your own, it is an extremely delicate process)

Monday comes and i call back ( it would have been a very long, and very expensive visit if he thought i should go in), and explain to the vet that i got the prolapse back in, and everything seems to be quite clear and healthy looking. we came to the conclusion that i should continue to watch the area, * me checking her daily* to be sure that it does not happen again and see how things go. ( So long as she remains active/alert and all such things) Ill try feeding her in two weeks time, and see how things go.

Were looking good so far, its remained in for three solid nights now, so im hoping that well be walking out of those woods happy and, hopefully without further incident.

A Dream Story

Bullsnake
I really forgot to post about a fairly recent dream ive had. I have a pretty big fascination with animal totems, and while i don't think there is some creature following me around somewhere, i do think that dreams can play an important role in how to figure out what your deepest thoughts could be.

Basically, the dream started out fairly simply. it was short, so dont expect a whole lot of action, but to me, it meant so much more. I have waited to see an animal in my dreams... in this way, for a very long time. ive always wanted to know what my totem was, and i was hit right in the face with this one :) so im pretty happy about it.

On to the story.

I was waiting, at an old house in Cornwall Bridge where i used to live. just sitting outside on the porch wondering where he was. I didn't know who i was waiting for, or what, just that... i knew he would be there. I started wandering around the yard, slowly, so that i wouldn't miss him if he showed up. it was night time out and i couldn't see well. i heard something in the woods and a large dark object was standing not 10 feet from me. He was a wolf. a dark silver Grey undercoat/belly and black with gold eyes. He stood there staring at me, not... exactly menacingly but not friendly either. But i knew i wasn't waiting for him. He was gone in a moment, and i went to lay on the ground to wait. as i lay there i glanced at the stars and looked to the constellation Orion. ( he is my favorite constellation and i look to him pretty often during the winter months) a few moments later finally, he came. A big old brown bear. He lay with me for awhile until i finally woke up.

weird.

I was more curious in the end after i woke up about why the wolf stood there, not meanly, but not friendly either. like he was just watching me, judging me or something. Im pleased with bear. im not sure he is very common or not as a well liked totem but im happy to have him. maybe for life? maybe only for this time where i am changing? It was interesting though, and for now, i feel that while wolf didnt really do much other than stand there and look at me, that i should still keep him in my mind. I think they are both there in my dreams when i need to be shown something. ^_^

Strange i know, but hey its something interesting to think about too.

SUBOC!! WOO!

I went to the Hamburg Reptile show this weekend with a couple friends to see what we could empty our pockets for. ( they did a much better job emptying their pockets than myself) and i strained to be the voice of reason. IE: justifying why purchasing another critter is a good thing, and totally acceptable! ha!

I found a bunch of the black plastic hides that i have wanted for some time, and got them a buck or two cheaper a piece because i bought so many. very happy about that :)

But who cares about plastic hides when theres a critter to be had!?

After walking around the show two, possibly three times.. deciding whether or not i should actually go through with getting her, the better part of my insane mind said " DO IT! " so. i did. Though i was sorely tempted by a Caulker Cay Male as well... he just wasnt up to my standards and the fact that they knew NOTHING about him deterred me completely.

But anyway...

This little girl is a snake that i have wanted for... oh... AGES. And finally she is mine! i rarely see these guys for sale often, and of course, after i find one, i find three more people online with babies or semi adult animals. Go figure... Also on that note, I find out that at that same very show, another guy got three of them het for blonde. *blood boils* ( The Blonde Morph is my favorite in the TPR's)curse him!

Ah well, this girl is still 100% awesome. These seriously, next to the bulls, have to be my favorite colubrids ever.

To celebrate my 22nd Birthday i went to the Museum of Natural History - New York, With my mom today. we had a blast and i got so many pictures, and good NYC food its not even funny :)

we even went to the Twin Towers site, and Chinatown! ( i saw the fish markets and baby turtles being sold on the side of the street) and the subways were, as usual fun, but this time... packed.

I didnt manage to buy anything interesting but ONE cool poster from the Museum. but, im sure ill go again real soon, cause i want to visit the met, and just chill in the NHM again for a day.

The frog Exhibit was very cool and just made me want dart frogs even more! and the Unicorns Dragons and Mermaids Exhibit was pretty nifty too, but not worth paying money to see so much. ( the dinos would have been better worth that money *I* think. ) ^_-

So besides that, and a TIRING train ride home, im exhausted and am looking forward to a good nights sleep.
ENJOY!

Behind here for sanitys sake, there are LOADS of em! )
